How to care for poinsettia
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light for at least 6 hours a day. Avoid direct scorching sun and prolonged darkness, especially during blooming.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, allowing excess water to drain completely. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water, which can lead to root rot.
- Soil: Prefers well-draining, humus-rich potting mix. A standard houseplant mix with added perlite works well.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 60-70°F (15-21°C). Protect from cold drafts and extreme temperature fluctuations.
- Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity; misting occasionally can be beneficial, especially in heated homes.
- Fertilizer: No fertilizer is needed while in bloom. If keeping for re-blooming, fertilize monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer from spring through fall.
- Propagation: Propagated by stem cuttings, though it can be challenging for the home gardener. Cuttings should be taken in spring or early summer.
Is poinsettia toxic to pets?
Not pet-safe. Poinsettias are mildly toxic to pets and people, causing mild gastrointestinal upset, skin irritation, or mouth irritation if ingested, but rarely serious harm. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.
Common problems
- Leaf drop: Often caused by overwatering, underwatering, or extreme temperature changes; ensure consistent moisture and stable temperatures.
- Lack of color/re-blooming: Requires a strict dark period (14 hours of darkness daily) for 8-10 weeks in autumn to stimulate bract coloration for re-blooming.
Did you know?
The colorful parts of the poinsettia are actually modified leaves called bracts, not flower petals; the true flowers are small, yellow structures in the center.
