How to care for saguaro cactus
- Light: Requires full, direct sun for at least 6-8 hours daily to thrive. In a home environment, place in the brightest possible spot.
- Water: Extremely drought-tolerant. Water very sparingly, only once every few weeks to months when soil is completely dry. Reduce significantly in winter.
- Soil: Needs extremely well-draining, sandy or gravelly soil, typical of cactus mixes. Good drainage is essential to prevent rot.
- Temperature: Thrives in hot temperatures, ideally 70-100°F (21-38°C). Young plants need protection from frost; mature plants can tolerate light frost.
- Humidity: Requires very low humidity levels. High humidity combined with cool temperatures can lead to rot.
- Fertilizer: Generally does not require fertilizer, especially when planted outdoors. For container plants, a very diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer can be applied once in spring.
- Propagation: Propagated from seeds, which is a very slow process taking years for significant growth. Cuttings are possible from arms, but very difficult and prone to rot.
Is saguaro cactus toxic to pets?
Not pet-safe. The spines are a physical hazard to pets and humans. Ingestion of plant material is generally not considered toxic, but the spines can cause mechanical injury. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.
Common problems
- Rotting/softening base: This is almost always due to overwatering; ensure excellent drainage, reduce watering frequency drastically, and inspect for rot.
- Slow or stunted growth: Ensure it receives full, intense direct sunlight for most of the day; saguaros require maximum light.
Did you know?
Saguaro cacti only begin to grow their first arms around 50-70 years of age, and can live for more than 150 years, reaching heights of over 50 feet.
