How to care for barrel cactus
- Light: Requires full, direct sunlight for at least 6-8 hours daily. Insufficient light will lead to weak, elongated growth.
- Water: Water deeply but infrequently, only when the soil is completely dry, typically every 4-6 weeks in summer. Keep almost completely dry in winter.
- Soil: Needs extremely well-draining cactus mix. Incorporate extra perlite or pumice to enhance drainage.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures, 70-100°F (21-38°C). Protect from frost, as most varieties are not cold-hardy.
- Humidity: Prefers low humidity, typical of desert environments.
- Fertilizer: Fertilize sparingly, once or twice during the growing season (late spring to early summer) with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Propagation: Primarily propagated by seeds, as offsets are rare. This is a very slow process.
Is barrel cactus toxic to pets?
Not pet-safe. The spines can cause physical injury to pets and humans. Ingesting parts of some cactus species can cause digestive upset. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.
Common problems
- Mushy/soft spots: Indicates overwatering and rot; immediately cut out affected areas if possible, or the plant may be lost.
- Stunted or etiolated growth: Caused by insufficient light; move to the brightest possible location.
Did you know?
Some large barrel cacti can live for over 100 years and store significant amounts of water within their ribbed stems, though not always potable.
