How to care for rosemary

  • Light: Requires full sun, at least 6-8 hours daily, for best growth and flavor. Insufficient light can lead to leggy growth.
  • Water: Drought-tolerant once established. Water deeply when the top few inches of soil are dry, allowing it to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-draining, sandy, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It dislikes heavy, wet soils.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 7-10. Can tolerate light frost but needs protection in colder climates or brought indoors as a potted plant.
  • Humidity: Prefers average to low humidity. High humidity combined with poor air circulation can lead to fungal issues.
  • Fertilizer: Generally does not require much fertilizer. A light application of balanced granular fertilizer in spring is usually sufficient, or compost if the soil is poor.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated from semi-hardwood stem cuttings taken in spring or summer. Can also be grown from seed, though germination can be slow and unreliable.

Is rosemary toxic to pets?

Not pet-safe. Rosemary is generally safe in small culinary amounts but can cause mild gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs if large quantities are ingested. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.

Common problems

  • Root rot: Ensure excellent soil drainage and avoid overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
  • Powdery mildew (in humid conditions): Provide good air circulation and avoid overhead watering. Prune plants to improve airflow.
