How to care for paddle plant

  • Light: Requires bright, direct sunlight for several hours daily to develop its best color. A south or west-facing window is ideal.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry, then allow it to dry out again before the next watering. Overwatering is the most common cause of issues.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix, possibly amended with extra perlite or grit. Ensure good aeration for the roots.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C). Protect from frost, as it is not cold hardy.
  • Humidity: Tolerates average to low household humidity well. High humidity can make it more susceptible to fungal problems.
  • Fertilizer: Feed sparingly with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer specifically for succulents during the growing season (spring/summer). Fertilize every 2-4 weeks, or not at all if repotting annually.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated from leaf cuttings or offsets that form at the base of the plant. Allow cuttings to callus for a few days before planting in dry soil.

Is paddle plant toxic to pets?

Not pet-safe. Contains cardiac glycosides, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, abnormal heart rate, and even death if ingested by pets. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.

Common problems

  • Leaves turning green and losing color: Increase light exposure; the plant needs more direct sunlight to develop its characteristic red edges.
  • Root rot/mushy leaves: Reduce watering frequency and ensure soil is well-draining; only water when the soil is completely dry.
