How to care for golden barrel cactus

  • Light: Requires full sun for at least 6 hours daily; a south-facing window is ideal indoors. Etiolation (stretching) occurs without enough light.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry, typically every 2-4 weeks during growing season. Reduce watering significantly in winter, allowing it to stay dry.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, possibly amended with extra perlite or pumice. Good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 65-90°F (18-32°C). Can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 40°F (4°C) if kept dry, but protect from frost.
  • Humidity: Thrives in low humidity environments; typical indoor humidity is usually fine. High humidity can encourage fungal issues.
  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice during the growing season (spring/summer). Do not fertilize in winter.
  • Propagation: Mainly propagated by seeds, which can be slow and challenging for the home grower. Offsets (pups) are rare and appear only on very old plants.

Is golden barrel cactus toxic to pets?

Not pet-safe. Non-toxic, but the sharp spines can cause physical injury to pets or people if handled improperly. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.

Common problems

  • Root rot: Ensure excellent drainage and only water when the soil is completely dry to the touch.
  • Lack of growth/etiolation: Move to a brighter location to provide more direct sunlight, ideally a south-facing window or outdoors.

Did you know?

Despite its common name, the Golden Barrel Cactus can take up to 20 years to reach its full 'barrel' size.
