The short answer
Water pothos when the top 1–2 inches of potting mix feel dry. A weekly check is useful, but a fixed weekly watering schedule can leave the roots too wet.
Why this happens
Bright light, warm temperatures, and a small pot make the mix dry faster. Low light and cool winter conditions slow water use. The surface can feel dry while the bottom remains wet, so check deeper in larger pots.
What to do
- Feel the mix with a finger or wooden skewer before watering.
- Water slowly across the soil until water exits the drainage holes.
- Empty the saucer or decorative outer pot.
- Check again in several days and wait if the mix is still moist.
Keep in mind
Yellow leaves with persistently wet soil suggest excess moisture. Do not add more water just because a leaf droops.
