The short answer
Let a snake plant's potting mix dry through most or all of the pot before watering thoroughly. Its thick leaves store water, so it tolerates a dry spell better than constantly damp roots.
Why this happens
A plant in a dim room may need water far less often than one in bright light. Heavy soil and pots without drainage increase the risk of root rot, particularly in winter.
What to do
- Check dryness below the surface with a wooden skewer.
- Use a pot with drainage and a free-draining mix.
- Water the soil, avoiding trapped water between the leaves.
- Let excess water drain away completely.
Keep in mind
Soft, mushy leaf bases or an unpleasant smell need a root inspection, not another watering.
