Can I bottom-water my peace lily?

PlantBetter · Published October 8, 2026

The short answer

Yes. Bottom watering can moisten a peace lily's mix evenly, provided the pot has drainage holes and is removed once moisture reaches the upper soil.

Why this happens

It is useful when dry potting mix initially repels water. However, bottom watering alone does not flush accumulated fertilizer salts, so occasional watering from above is helpful.

What to do

  1. Place the nursery pot in a shallow basin of water.
  2. Check after 15–20 minutes rather than leaving it unattended.
  3. Remove it when the upper mix becomes moist.
  4. Drain fully and occasionally water from above to rinse the mix.

Keep in mind

Never leave the plant sitting in water continuously. A drooping peace lily can have wet, damaged roots as well as dry soil.
