How to care for zz plant

  • Light: Tolerates very low light, but thrives in medium to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch its leaves.
  • Water: Water thoroughly but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It's more tolerant of drought than overwatering.
  • Soil: Requires well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus or succulent blend. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
  • Temperature: Prefers average to warm room temperatures, between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
  • Humidity: Tolerates low to average household humidity. No special humidity requirements are needed.
  • Fertilizer: Feed sparingly with a balanced liquid fertilizer once or twice during the growing season (spring/summer). Do not fertilize in winter.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings or individual leaf cuttings in water or soil. It can also be divided at the rhizome.

Is zz plant toxic to pets?

Not pet-safe. ZZ Plants are toxic to cats, dogs, and humans due to calcium oxalate crystals, causing oral irritation, pain, and swelling if ingested. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.

Common problems

  • Yellowing leaves/soft stems: Classic signs of overwatering; ensure soil dries out completely between waterings and improve drainage.
  • Brown leaf tips/stunted growth: Could indicate underwatering or too much direct sunlight; adjust watering schedule or move to a shadier spot.

Did you know?

The ZZ Plant stores water in its thick rhizomes (underground stems), which is why it can tolerate long periods of drought.
