How to care for yucca
- Light: Prefers bright, direct to indirect light, ideally receiving several hours of direct sun daily. It can tolerate medium light but may become leggy.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 inches of soil are completely dry. Yuccas are very susceptible to root rot if overwatered, so err on the side of underwatering.
- Soil: Requires a very well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus/succulent blend or regular potting soil amended with sand and perlite.
- Temperature: Thrives in average room temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 50°F (10°C) but protect from frost.
- Humidity: Tolerates average indoor humidity and does not require special humidity considerations. It is quite drought-tolerant.
- Fertilizer: Fertilize sparingly with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once every 2-4 months during the growing season. No fertilizer needed in fall and winter.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings or by planting offshoots (pups) that grow from the base of the plant. Allow cut ends to callus before planting.
Is yucca toxic to pets?
Not pet-safe. Toxic to cats, dogs, and horses, causing symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness if ingested due to saponins. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.
Common problems
- Soft, mushy stem/trunk: A sign of severe overwatering and root rot. Remove affected parts, repot in fresh, dry soil, and adjust watering.
- Brown tips on leaves: Often indicates underwatering or mineral buildup from tap water. Water more consistently and consider using filtered water.

Yucca plants are known for their incredibly deep root systems, which allow them to survive in very arid conditions.
