How to care for weeping fig
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light; it can tolerate some direct morning sun. Inadequate light can lead to leaf drop.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry, ensuring good drainage. Avoid both overwatering and letting the soil dry out completely for extended periods.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. Good aeration and drainage are crucial for its root health.
- Temperature: Prefers consistent room temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes, which can cause leaf drop.
- Humidity: Enjoys high humidity. Mist frequently, use a pebble tray, or place near a humidifier to prevent leaf crisping.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter.
- Propagation: Can be propagated by stem cuttings taken in spring or early summer, rooted in water or moist potting mix, or through air layering.
Is weeping fig toxic to pets?
Not pet-safe. Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans, causing oral irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea due to insoluble calcium oxalates and proteolytic enzymes. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.
Common problems
- Excessive leaf drop: Commonly caused by sudden changes in environment (light, temperature, location), over/underwatering, or drafts. Provide consistent care and stable conditions.
- Yellowing leaves: Often a sign of overwatering, nutrient deficiency, or pest infestation. Check soil moisture and inspect for pests.
Did you know?
Weeping Figs are sensitive to change; even moving them to a different spot in the same room can trigger temporary leaf drop.
