How to care for umbrella tree
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; direct sunlight can scorch its leaves. Tolerates medium light but may become leggy and less vibrant.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Allow the soil to dry out somewhat between waterings to prevent root rot.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining, general-purpose potting mix. Amend with perlite for extra drainage if needed.
- Temperature: Thrives in average room temperatures between 60-75°F (16-24°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
- Humidity: Tolerates average household humidity but appreciates moderate to high humidity. Occasional misting can be beneficial, especially in dry homes.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings, which root in water or moist soil. Air layering is also a viable method for larger stems.
Is umbrella tree toxic to pets?
Not pet-safe. Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans due to calcium oxalates, causing oral irritation, pain, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if ingested. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.
Common problems
- Dropping leaves: Can be caused by various stressors like overwatering, underwatering, cold drafts, or sudden environmental changes. Assess care routine.
- Yellowing leaves: Often indicates overwatering; allow soil to dry more between waterings. Can also be due to nutrient deficiency or natural aging.
Did you know?
The 'Umbrella' name comes from the arrangement of its leaflets, which radiate outwards from a central point like the spokes of an umbrella.
