How to care for satin pothos
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; direct sun can scorch its leaves and fade the variegation. It can tolerate medium light but growth will be slower.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry, or when the leaves start to show slight curling. Allow soil to dry out between waterings.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, airy potting mix. A standard indoor potting mix with added perlite or orchid bark is ideal.
- Temperature: Thrives in average room temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F (16°C).
- Humidity: Tolerates average household humidity but appreciates higher levels. Occasional misting can be beneficial, especially in dry environments.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter.
- Propagation: Easily propagated by stem cuttings with at least one node, rooted in water or moist potting mix. Cuttings root quickly and reliably.
Is satin pothos toxic to pets?
Not pet-safe. Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans, causing oral irritation, pain, swelling, and vomiting due to insoluble calcium oxalates if ingested. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.
Common problems
- Yellowing leaves: Most often a sign of overwatering; ensure the soil dries out between waterings. Can also indicate nutrient deficiency or too little light.
- Curling or crispy leaves: Typically caused by underwatering or low humidity. Check soil moisture and increase humidity if necessary.
Did you know?
Despite its common name, Satin Pothos is not a true Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) but rather a close relative in the Araceae family.
