How to care for philodendron birkin

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; direct sunlight can burn the delicate variegation. It can tolerate medium light but will grow slower and show less prominent stripes.
  • Water: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Ensure good drainage and avoid letting it sit in soggy soil, which can lead to root rot.
  • Soil: Thrives in a well-draining, aerated potting mix rich in organic matter. An aroid mix with bark, perlite, and peat is ideal.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
  • Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity; misting or placing it near a humidifier can be beneficial. It tolerates average household humidity well.
  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • Propagation: Typically propagated by stem cuttings with at least one node, though tissue culture is common for commercial production. Cuttings can be rooted in water or moist soil.

Is philodendron birkin toxic to pets?

Not pet-safe. Toxic to cats and dogs due to insoluble calcium oxalates, which can cause oral irritation, pain, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.

Common problems

  • Loss of variegation: Increase light exposure, ensuring it is bright but indirect. Lower light can cause the white stripes to fade.
  • Brown leaf tips: Often indicates low humidity or inconsistent watering. Increase humidity and maintain a regular watering schedule.

Did you know?

The Birkin is a relatively new cultivar, believed to be a spontaneous mutation of Philodendron 'Rojo Congo'.
