How to care for monstera deliciosa
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sun can scorch leaves, while insufficient light can prevent fenestrations and lead to leggy growth.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining, airy potting mix that retains some moisture. An aroid mix with bark, perlite, and peat moss is ideal.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures, between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Protect from cold drafts and extreme fluctuations.
- Humidity: Enjoys high humidity. Regular misting, a humidifier, or a pebble tray will encourage lush growth and larger leaves.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter.
- Propagation: Easily propagated from stem cuttings with at least one node and aerial root, placed in water or moist soil. Can also be air layered.
Is monstera deliciosa toxic to pets?
Not pet-safe. Monstera Deliciosa is toxic to cats, dogs, and humans due to insoluble calcium oxalates, causing oral irritation, pain, and swelling. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.
Common problems
- Yellowing leaves/black spots: Often a sign of overwatering; reduce frequency and ensure excellent drainage.
- No fenestrations (splits): Indicates insufficient light or immaturity; move to brighter indirect light and provide support for climbing.
Did you know?
The characteristic splits and holes (fenestrations) in Monstera leaves are thought to help them withstand strong winds in their native jungle habitats and allow light to reach lower leaves.
