How to care for maidenhair fern

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; direct sunlight will scorch its delicate fronds. Low light can lead to sparse growth.
  • Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Never allow the soil to dry out completely, as this will quickly kill the plant.
  • Soil: Requires a rich, well-draining, and moisture-retentive potting mix. A peat-based mix with added perlite or vermiculite works well.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
  • Humidity: Absolutely requires high humidity, typically above 60%. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or grow in a terrarium to meet its needs.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a half-strength liquid fertilizer. Over-fertilization can harm it.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated by dividing the rhizomes during repotting. Spores can also be collected and sown, though this is more challenging.

Is maidenhair fern toxic to pets?

Pet-safe. Non-toxic to cats and dogs. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.

Common problems

  • Crispy, brown fronds: Most often due to insufficient humidity or underwatering. Immediately increase humidity and ensure soil remains consistently moist.
  • Yellowing fronds: Can indicate overwatering (leading to root rot) or too much direct light. Check soil moisture and adjust light if needed.
