How to care for croton
- Light: Requires bright, direct to indirect light for at least 4-6 hours daily to maintain its vibrant leaf colors. Insufficient light will cause leaves to turn green.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, reducing frequency slightly in winter.
- Soil: Needs a well-draining, rich potting mix that retains some moisture. A standard potting mix amended with organic matter works well.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F (15°C).
- Humidity: Requires high humidity to prevent leaf drop and maintain health. Mist frequently, use a humidifier, or place on a pebble tray.
- Fertilizer: Feed every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Suspend feeding in fall and winter.
- Propagation: Propagated from stem cuttings, which can be rooted in water or moist soil. Use rooting hormone to improve success rates.
Is croton toxic to pets?
Not pet-safe. Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans, causing oral irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. The sap can also cause skin irritation. See our guide to toxic plants for cats and dogs.
Common problems
- Leaf drop: Commonly caused by sudden changes in temperature, low humidity, or inconsistent watering. Provide stable conditions, consistent moisture, and high humidity.
- Fading leaf color: Indicates insufficient light. Move the plant to a brighter location with more direct, yet still protected, sunlight to enhance its variegation.
Did you know?
Croton leaves are often used in tropical floral arrangements for their striking colors and unique shapes, like the 'oak leaf' or 'spiral' varieties.
