The short answer
Repot when the roots are crowded, water runs straight through a dense root ball, or the mix has degraded. Spring or early summer is usually convenient for a healthy, actively growing plant.
Why this happens
A root appearing at one drainage hole does not automatically mean urgent repotting. Look for multiple signs, such as roots circling tightly and the pot drying unusually fast.
What to do
- Inspect the root ball gently.
- Choose a pot only slightly wider than the current root mass.
- Replace degraded mix with fresh, free-draining potting mix.
- Keep conditions stable afterward and avoid immediate heavy feeding.
Keep in mind
A much larger pot retains excess wet soil. Root rot may require a smaller pot and urgent care rather than waiting for spring.
