The short answer
Aloe needs a larger pot when its root mass is crowded or the plant becomes unstable, not simply because its leaves extend beyond the rim. Choose only a modest increase in size.
Why this happens
Aloe has water-storing leaves and is vulnerable to prolonged wetness. An oversized container filled with damp mix can be riskier than a slightly snug pot.
What to do
- Check the roots and whether the pot is stable.
- Select a draining pot just wider than the root ball.
- Use a porous succulent potting mix.
- Remove offsets separately if crowding is mostly caused by pups.
Keep in mind
Do not bury the leaf bases deeply. Allow cut or damaged areas to dry before exposing them to prolonged moisture.
