Should I cut yellow leaves off my plant?

The short answer

A fully yellow or dead leaf can be removed with clean scissors. If it is partly green, first address the underlying cause and decide whether the remaining healthy tissue is worth keeping.

Why this happens

Old leaves naturally age, but sudden widespread yellowing may signal stress. Pruning improves appearance; it does not correct overwatering, pests, or poor light.

What to do

  1. Check soil moisture and inspect for pests.
  2. Clean the cutting tool.
  3. Cut the leaf stalk without damaging nearby stems or new growth.
  4. Monitor new leaves rather than expecting the yellow leaf to recover.

Keep in mind

Avoid stripping many leaves from a stressed plant at once. Leave healthy foliage to support recovery.
